Syllabus for the BSc in Forestry program at TU: The Institute of Forestry’s (IOF) purpose is to develop human resources based on the country’s current and future demands in the fields of forestry and natural resources. The long-term goal of IOF is to establish itself as a hub for excellence in forestry and natural resource research and teaching. Contrary to traditional forestry, the goal of forestry education is to generate knowledgeable, technically proficient, and professionally qualified human resources to deal with local, national, and global concerns.
The woods of Nepal need top priority in terms of conservation and management given the socioeconomic circumstances of the population and the geographical features consisting of steep and rocky rough terrain. The list of endangered species has gotten longer and longer as a result of the destruction of forest resources, which invites various types of environmental risks that threaten the survival of every creature.
The Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation (MOFSC) has been continuously updating its forest policy and regulations in order to manage and conserve forest resources, maintain biodiversity, and preserve ecological balance. In order to gather feedback on how to train its graduates in accordance with the needs and policies of the government, IOF has been communicating with MOFSC and a number of other institutions and organizations. MOFSC is the principal government organization that employs IOF graduates.
In light of the sociopolitical and environmental changes in Nepal, IOF has made an effort to meet these changes and has consistently updated its curricula. According to Tribhuvan University policy, curriculum development is a continual process. IOF has created a four-year forestry curriculum. The Faculty Board of IOF evaluated and modified the courses and subjects proposed by the Subject Committees.
The Institute of Forestry’s mission
One of Tribhuvan University’s five technical institutes is the Institute of Forestry (IOF). The development of technically sound, socially acceptable, and competent human resources in forestry and natural resource management is the goal of IOF.
History of Development
The Institute of Forestry (IOF) is the only academic institution at the national level in Nepal that has been offering training and creating middle- and lower-level labour in the field of natural resource management. In 1947, at Singh Durbar in Kathmandu, the Institute was founded as the Nepal Forestry Institute. In 1957–1958, it was moved to Suping (Bhimphedi), Makwanpur. The Institute was relocated to Hetauda in 1965 after the Indian Co-operation Mission finished erecting the structures. Up to July 1972, the Institute was managed by the Nepali Department of Forest.
In the same year as the Institute of Forestry, it joined the Tribhuvan University system and merged as a component institute. It only produced foresters of the technician grade until the late 1970s (Rangers). With improved facilities created with the help of technical and financial support from the World Bank, International Development Agency (IDA), and United States Agency for International Development, IOF expanded its academic programs in 1981 to a two-year Certificate Level in Hetauda Campus and a Bachelor in Forestry in Pokhara Campus (USAID).

- to create effective managers in the field of natural resource management who are professional foresters who are knowledgeable and practice-oriented.
- to improve the academic environment and motivate students, instructors, and staff to pursue professional advancement.
- to promote research initiatives that can deal with real-world issues facing farmers and larger communities.
- to establish IOF as the premier institution for the study of forestry and other topics related to natural resources.
Students who have completed an I.Sc., a Diploma in Forestry, a Plus Two Science, an A-level, or an equivalent course with a minimum of 50% overall are eligible to apply for admission to the Bachelor Level program. All the students who have applied for the entrance exam given by IOF Section should take the examination successfully.
System for Evaluation and Examination
At the end of each semester, students are evaluated externally based on theory and practical exams. Students must receive 40% of the possible points in the final theoretical, internal evaluation, practical exams, and field training in order to pass the test. Each student receives a statement of grades after the results for that particular semester are announced. Students may take the make-up test if they don’t pass the normal semester exam.
Requirement for Attendance
Students should have at least 70% attendance in each subject. A student who doesn’t meet the attendance criteria may lose their right to participate in the final exam.
Award of Degree and Academic Records Transcript: Syllabus for the BSc in Forestry program on TU
A student will be qualified to get a B.Sc. in Forestry after successfully completing all of the prerequisites outlined in the course program. The Controller of Examination at Tribhuvan University provides each individual student who has met all requirements with an academic transcript. The overall percentage of marks earned in all exams will be used to determine a student’s academic standing. The following is the grade:

The subject matter committee, number, and a brief description of the book are included in parenthesis after the course code in this curriculum. The Subject Committee that the course belongs to is indicated by the abbreviated text that comes at the start of the course code. At the bachelor’s level, the course numbers range from 300 to 600.
