The express bus service is a newly introduced public transportation system in Kathmandu, Nepal, operating along the Suryabinayak – Ratnapark road section which is implemented from today, 21st September, 2023. Its main objective is to decrease the commuting duration for travelers. While regular public buses typically require 1.5 hours to cover the same route, the newly introduced express bus service is expected to complete the journey within 45 minutes. This service operates every day during specific hours, 9 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 6 pm.
These red lanes have been designated specifically for express buses, enabling them to avoid traffic jams and minimize potential delays. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has requested the Department of Transport Management to allocate 25 buses for the express service. Express transit vehicles like these are a common practice globally to mitigate public transport congestion caused by traffic jams. Ministry officials also say that this marks the first implementation of this system in Nepal.
As per the department’s guidelines, these buses will be available for pick-up and drop-off at 19 specified locations, including Ratnapark, Bhadrakali, Maitighar, Babarmahal, New Baneshwor, Shantinagar, Tinkune, Koteshwor, Jadibuti, Lokanthali, Kaushaltar, Gathaghar, and Chardobato.
