History of This School
When Patna Province priest Fr. Marshall Moran came to Nepal in October 1949, there had been discussions about opening a Jesuit school there. General Mrigendra Shamsher Rana, the Director of Public Education in Nepal, traveled to Patna in November 1950 to advise Fr. Moran that the Nepali government was eager for a school to be run by the Jesuits at Godavar.
Fr. Joseph M. Egan, the Provincial of Chicago during the winter of 1950–1951, came to Godavari on January 6, the Epiphany Feast. He quickly gave his consent after concluding that the plan to construct a school in Godavari was realistic. On June 6, 1951, Fr. Moran and Frs. Francis Murphy and Ed Saxton flew into Kathmandu before continuing on to Godavari. Godavari is approximately 15 km outside of Kathmandu.
St. Xavier’s School
They brought materials with them so they could settle down in Godavari and take care of their immediate requirements. Although there were a number of structures on the land where the school was to be built, none of them were suitable for use as a school. The early settlers tried greatly to transform the rooms into classrooms quickly and effectively. The first group of 65 students was admitted to St. Xavier’s Godavari school on July 1, 1951. On September 9, 1954, the Primary Section was shifted to Jawalakhel due to the steadily increasing student population.
The primary section was located at Jawalakhel, and the high school section was built at Godavari. To meet the rising demand for admissions into the Jesuit school, many further improvements were made. St. Xavier’s Godavari eventually became a full-fledged primary boarding school that could hold the enrollment of 280 pupils, while St. Xavier’s Jawalakhel eventually developed into a full-fledged high school. The first of these modifications were made in 1969.
The Nepal Jesuit Society’s Education Commission first began discussing how to make St. Xavier’s Godavari more current in 1992. Four decisions were made for Godavari School by the Jesuit Fathers of Nepal in 1996 after much deliberation, thought, and consideration. First, it would be co-ed to demonstrate our concern for girls. The school would accept both boys and girls.
Second, the fact that it would be a neighborhood school would demonstrate our concern for those in the area. Boys and girls largely from the Godavari region will attend the institution. They felt that it would no longer be necessary to operate a “National” school because there are so many excellent local schools in various regions of Nepal. Lastly, it was chosen that Godavari would turn into a high school to aid the children even more.
