About Chartered Accountancy (CA) at Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN)

Chartered Accountancy (CA) has been regarded as one of the challenging courses in Accounting discipline by the students and is one of the prestigious and responsible accounting profession. The course is a perfect blend of theoretical and practical education which prepares students to be able to manage and operate the Business and several organizations. And, with the evolution of information technology and data everywhere, this course has also been covering not just the finance and accounting but also other disciplines of Account and Management as well.

Chartered Accountants are the professionals who have a deep knowledge regarding finance, financial management, and economy and these sectors are everchanging with the change in needs, demands of the people and organizations. Planning, managing, taking care of investments and management, auditing, supervising, guiding etc are some of the responsibilities of a Chartered Accountant. Thus they are an integral part of any private, public or governmental firms and organizations.

Thus the profession of a CA is regarded as one of the highest paying ones.

Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN)

ICAN is the member of International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), Confederation of Asia and Pacific Accountants (CAPA), and South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA). ICAN has been providing medals and awards to the meritorious students who perform well in different levels of CA exam. It also conducts different seminars, conference, and counseling for the students who want to join CA program or are studying it.

Students can join CA course under distance learning method of ICAN and can get admission in any of the Institutes providing CA course in Nepal. Students may also opt for self-learning and then give the examination. Also, there are scholarships for the students for various levels of CA program i.e. CAP I, CAP II, and CAP III which are:

  1. Chartered Accountancy Professional (CAP)-I Level: Candidates with 50% or more (equivalence) grade or marks in PCL or 10 +2 exam may apply.
  2. Chartered Accountancy Professional (CAP)-II Level: Candidates with 50% or more (equivalence) grade or marks in Bachelor's or Master's level exam or CA Professional CAP I level exam may apply.
  3. Chartered Accountancy Professional (CAP)-III Level: Candidates should have passed CA Professional CAP II; or Intermediate level exam.

These scholarships are being provided since 2007 AD and include the following:

  • Study materials
  • Other materials of the ICAN
  • Participation in the Crash course by the ICAN.



Course Structure:

Under ICAN, CA course is a distance learning based program and has been divided into:

  • CAP I - 6 Months

  • CAP II - 9 Months

  • CAP III - 3 Years (including practical training)

Professional CAP I:

It comprises three papers:

Paper 1: Fundamentals of Accounting

Paper 2: Mercantile Laws and Fundamentals of Economics

Paper 3: Fundamentals of Management and Commercial Mathematics and Statistics

Professional CAP II:

It comprises seven papers which are divided into further two groups:

Group I:

Paper 1: Advanced Accounting

Paper 2: Audit and Assurance

Paper 3: Corporate and Other Laws

Group II:

Paper 4: Financial Management

Paper 5: Cost and Management Accounting

Paper 6: Business Communication and Marketing

Paper 7: Income Tax and VAT

Professional CAP III:

It comprises eight papers which are divided into further two groups:

Group I:

Paper 1: Advanced Financial Reporting

Paper 2: Advanced Financial Management

Paper 3: Advanced Audit and Assurance

Paper 4: Corporate Laws

Group II:

Paper 5: Management Information System

Paper 6: Advanced Taxation

Paper 7: Advanced Cost and Management

Paper 8: Strategic Management and Decision Making Analysis


The eligibility criterion for CA program can be best described as:


  • Candidates should have completed their higher secondary or PCL or A Level or equivalent
  • See other provisions of ICAN if any


  • Candidates should have passed the CA CAP I exam
  • Graduates or Post Graduates of Commerce, Business Administration or Management disciplines with minimum 50% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade can join
  • Graduates or Post Graduates of in any discipline which has not been mentioned above and with minimum 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade can join


  • Candidates should have passed both the groups of CAP II level exams
  • A candidate who is a registered article trainee under a practicing Chartered Accountant by signing the Articleship Deed may join. However, the Articleship Deed must be submitted to ICAN within 1 Month by the date it was signed.
