If Yevgeny Prigozhin’s chapter has been written, he lived as he apparently died; flamboyantly, violently and being the center of intrigue.
On August 23rd, Wednesday afternoon, an Embraer Legacy business jet registered to the Wagner mercenary boss crashed between the villages of Kuzhenkino and Kuzhenkinskoe in Russia’s Tver region. All 10 aboard were killed. Russia’s state aviation agency claimed Prigozhin to be on board.
But there were several theories that took a toll on the internet. Was the plane shot down? Or, perhaps, bomb had been placed on board? Did Prigozhin really die? Russian arch-propagandist Vladimir Solovyov stated reports of the oligarch’s death were premature.
The Ukrainians and their allies, Solovyov insinuated it to be a fake message about the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, following a report from Rossiya-24, a Russian television channel. Russian TV Channel revealed Prigozhin’s penchant for wigs, disguises and multiple passports which was found at one of his residence.
Russian investigative outlets have reported that the Wagner head apparently has employed at least one body double. Prigozhin was involved in meddling in the 2016 presidential election where he ran the notorious ‘troll farms’ which he did to troll the world by staging his death.
However, the circumstance of the crash, as well as Prigozhin’s open confrontation with Kremlin in June seemed to be overlooked. Lurid stuff but, perhaps not more lurid than Prigozhin’s own performances. And his profanity-laced tirades against Russia’s top military brass, whom he accused of being ‘fat cats’, sealed his reputation as a villain out of all central casting.
