What is MBBS? 

MBBS is a degree that is pursued by those students who dream of becoming a doctor in the future. It is one of the most prestigious medical science degrees in Nepal.

The abbreviation (MBBS) means “Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery”. It is a five and a half years degree. It also comprises an internship program at the end.


History of MBBS in Nepal:

Tribhuvan University (TU) is the oldest and largest university in Nepal. It started Nepal’s first medical degree program in 1978 to meet the demand for doctors in Nepal.

In Nepal, the number of Medical Schools started to grow after the establishment of the multiparty democracy system and the subsequent political changes.

In the beginning, Nepal didn’t have a proper plan and policy for the regulation and establishment of Medical colleges. The unsystematic approach had led to the growth of many medical institutions which were motivated by financial gain rather than offering high-quality education.


Current Scenario of MBBS:

The scenario has changed after the multiple hunger strikes by Dr. Govinda KC. He is A philanthropic orthopedic surgeon. He demanded investigations of financial irregularities and reformation of the entire medical education system.

His unconditional, sheer-willed, and selfless effort led to the establishment of the Medical Education Commission (MEC) in 2017. The MEC has to regulate and standardize medical education in Nepal.

It is responsible for ensuring the quality, professionalism, and institutional accountability of medical colleges. Also, to produce qualified and caring medical specialists.


Eligibility criteria for (+2) students:

  1. A candidate must complete their higher secondary education (+2) from the science stream (Biology Group).
  2. The score must be a minimum C+ grade or above.
  3. The GPA should be 2.4 or above or must secure 50% or above.


Eligibility criteria for A-Level students:

  1. The subject combination should comprise (Physic, Chemistry, Biology, and English) PCBE.
  2. A minimum C+ grade in PCBE subjects and C in general papers.
  3. The GPA should be 2.4 or must secure 50 % or above.

Eligibility of PCL, Nursing, HA,  Lab-Technicians, Pharmacy  for MBBS:

Students who have done HA, Lab-Technicians, and Pharmacy are eligible for MBBS. Students who have done PCL Nursing are not eligible for MBBS in Nepal.

ToA-Level be eligible for MBBS in Nepal, the diploma courses should contain subjects like physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and English in their curriculum. If not then such a diploma won’t work for an MBBS degree.

The PCL syllabus doesn’t comprise physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and English. This is why PCL students are not eligible for MBBS. PCL nursing is a three-year nursing degree that students can pursue after their SEE graduation. PCL Nursing stands for “Proficiency Certificate Level in Nursing.”


Fee structure of MBBS:

Every college has a different fee structure for MBBS. The annual tuition rate for MBBS is around 40 to 55 Lakhs. It is best to google the website of your desired MBBS college or visit it personally to know the actual fee structure. However, there are scholarships for students who perform better.

MBBS Universities in Nepal:

There are two primary universities and two independent institutions that govern medical colleges in Nepal. Altogether four boards govern the MBBS curriculum in Nepal. They are mentioned below:

  1. Tribhuvan University
  2. Kathmandu University

The two independent/autonomous Medical institutions are:

  1. BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS)
  2. Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS)

The independent colleges run autonomously and they have their private grading system. These universities and autonomous colleges altogether produce over 1,500 medical graduates per year.
