Scholarships available in Nepal

This article is about scholarships schemes available in Nepal. Quality education is generally expensive and everyone can’t afford it. Even though it comes under the basic rights of humans included in part 3, article 31 of the constitution of Nepal(2072B.S.) there’s no quality education provided by the government of Nepal due to which there are lots of private academic institutions. Private Academic institution is organized business to provide quality education and cost at the same level of quality which is out of reach for most students in developing country like Nepal. But the government started to take control of the private institution by introducing scholarships in the private sector too in which every institution is obliged to provide a certain number of seats to the students free of cost. So, the scholarship is solely designed for the needy one not everyone in the context of Nepal which is a bit contradictory to my topic but a scholarship is support or grant to the students in which everyone can check their eligibility under varieties of its type. So, this text will act as an avuncular to everyone who is seeking to get information on the scholarship.

Scholarship can be mainly categorized under national level and international level. In this text, we will only talk about the scholarship on the national level up to the higher secondary level.
The national level of scholarship: It includes all the varieties of scholarships available on the National level for the students trying to pursue education from primary level to higher level. So, the hierarchy of scholarship under this is discussed below:

a. Scholarship for primary level: The scholarship available or granted for the primary level of students comes under this scholarship. The scholarship provided by the government of Nepal is listed below:
I. Scholarship for Dalit: It is the scholarship provided to the students from ethnic minorities and margined caste in which they are granted or supported with some money. Distribution of such money is made as per the decision of the school management committee. So, Students must fall into this category to grab this type of scholarship.
II. Scholarship for Differently abled students: The targeted students under this scholarship are the students with differently able studying in committee school. Based on the category of differently able students as per the policy of government distribution of scholarship money is made.
Category of Differently Abled Students
1. A-category: A type of differently-abled students can move with the help of equipment and another person and having residence outside of the home.
Granted money: Rs 10000
2. B-category: B type of differently-abled students can move with the support of equipment and another person.
Granted money: Rs 5000
3. C-category: C type of differently-abled students can move with the help of equipment.

The given above data is taken from the Center of Educational Research and Social Development (COD). To explore more about the allowances made for the children and students of differently able click www.odi.org
III. Scholarship for Martyr’s children: Under this scholarship, children of martyrs declared by Nepal are granted some money of Scholarship as directed by the government. But students must carry a certificate as martyr’s children for being identified as eligible for this scholarship.
IV. Scholarship for Women: Girls are provided with special provision for education from primary level to higher level included in part 3, article 38, clause 5 in the constitution of Nepal(2072B.S.). They get a certain amount of scholarships as per the government in every academic institution.
As seen or comparing among the scholarship provided by the government of Nepal. They are mostly targeted on ethnic minorities, margined caste, economically indigent and geographically backward students. There are other more scholarship supported from NGO/INGO too but they are not so effective that’s why it is not included in the text.
The scholarship provided under the private schools and institution are also the same except some of them listed below:
Merit-Based Scholarship: The word ‘merit’ made it clear about the type of scholarship. SO, the students need to perform best in the terminal exam as well as in the final exam to grab this type of scholarship. The scholarship aid is different in the different private institutions but most of the institutions provide a cent percent scholarship in tuition fees only and the rest of the exam fees, lab fees are still chargeable. But still, in most academic institutions, even lab and exam fees are reimbursable.
Need-Based Scholarship: Economically indigent students are eligible for this type of scholarship in which they have to show their total assets information and their family monthly income which must be below Rs. 10000 or their parents must be a farmer. Landless family’s children are paid more scholarships.
Principal Scholarship: Under this scholarship, any students are eligible to get support on the recommendation of the principal of that institution. So, it has no criteria for eligibility to fall under this type of scholarship, just you need is the recommendation of the principal. Generally, the teacher’s children of that institution get this type of scholarship.
Sponsorship: It is the indirect way of getting a scholarship or financial support in which students are sponsored or get financial support from a third person. Generally, this type of scholarship is popular in a western country in which students have to convince the third person based on his/her academic consistency by writing a letter every month. If the sponsor gets disappointed by the inconsistency in his/her academics, they can terminate the funding for the fees of that student at any time.
While comparing the scholarships plan made from government and private institution, it can be found that private institution targets on excellent student or students carrying consistency in his/her academics but government targets on the students belonging from ethnic minorities, margined caste, economically indigent, and geographically backward.
B. Scholarship for Higher Secondary level: The educational level beyond the primary level is the higher secondary level. Generally, it is known as the +2 level in Nepal. All the scholarship for this level also remains similar if students want to continue in government schools but if they are applying for the private schools/colleges then few changes can be seen on the category of scholarship. Variation can be seen under need-based scholarship which is discussed below:
Alumni scholarship: Alumni scholarship generally means if you continue the same school for your higher secondary education as you had completed lower secondary and primary level of education in that school then as per the decision of school you will be granted with certain scholarship support.
Star performer in Art and Music Scholarship: This type of scholarship is generally popular in almost every colleges in which students who are star performer in Art and Music in the school or in interschool they are provided with cent percent fee waiver from tuition fees.
Sports Scholarship: If the student is champion in any game organized between interschool then he/she is specially treated with scholarship in every private as well as in government educational institution. This will remain helpful even if the students are applying for abroad study.
The remaining scholarships are similar up to this level. Apart from these types of scholarships, there is one more Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship found bit effective in Nepal in which students are paid around NRs2000 per month for two years who fall under the eligibility criteria of this scholarship. Those criteria are explained below:
I. Students should not have any scholarship before applying for this scholarship through the form generated by the Indian embassy website.
II. Students must secure above 60% in term exams of 11th and 12th to continue his/her scholarship.
For more information, you can visit the Indian embassy site (Click Here). It is generally published in October and eligible candidates are sent personal emails for their selection on a random basis which is a myth only because the result sheet is not published publicly which is doubtful.
Even in the era of expensive education, students are not devoid of pursuing education, only they are devoid of the right information. The right information will lead you to your desired path.
