A standardized test called the Test of English as a Foreign Language is used to evaluate the English language proficiency of non-native speakers looking to enroll in universities that use the English language. Over 11,000 universities and other institutions in more than 190 nations and territories recognize the test. IELTS, Cambridge Assessment English, and Trinity College London exams are a few of the more well-known English-language exams given worldwide.

The Educational Testing Service (ETS), a private non-profit company that creates and manages the exams, is the owner of the TOEFL trademark. Following the test, ETS generates official score reports that are submitted directly to universities and are valid for two years.

TOEFL Patterns

Reading: The reading part consists of three to four passages, each with ten questions and a length of about 700 words. The texts cover academic subjects and are similar to the kind of content you could find in a textbook for a community college.

Listening: Three to four lectures with six questions each make up the Listening section, which also includes questions on two to three dialogues. Each talk lasts 2.5 to 3 minutes, whereas lectures last 4.5 to 5.5 minutes. A student and either a lecturer or a member of the campus service staff are engaged in the dialogues.

Speaking: Four activities make up the Speaking section: one independent (Task 1) and three linked (Task 2, 3, 4). Test takers respond to opinion questions on well-known topics in assignment 1. They are judged on their capacity for speaking on the spot and articulating their thoughts in a clear, concise manner. In tasks 2 and 4, test-takers read a brief piece, listen to a lecture from an academic course or a chat about college life, and then combine the relevant details from the text and the talk to provide a solution to a question. Participants in task 3 of the exam listen to a lecture for an academic course before responding to a question about what they heard.

Writing: Two tasks—one integrated and one individual up the Writing component of the test, which evaluates an exam taker’s writing in an academic context. Participants in the integrated task read a passage on a subject related to their field of study and then listen to a speaker discuss it. After that, the test-taker writes a summary of the key ideas from the listening passage and discusses how these relate to the main ideas from the reading section.
